Smoking Materials Suspected as Cause of Edgewood Apartment Fire
A fire broke out last week in Edgewood. The Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company responded promptly and successfully controlled the fire within a matter of five minutes. The State Fire Marshal's Office identified that the fire originated in a bedroom and indicated that the cause was most likely improperly discarded smoking materials.
Luckily, the resident was alerted to the fire by a functioning smoke alarm in the apartment. The fire sprinkler system also kicked into action, effectively holding the fire at bay until the fire department arrived. Thanks to these measures, the fire was contained, preventing any major damage.
The estimated loss from the fire has been assessed at $5,000. It is important for all residents to be cautious when dealing with smoking materials and to ensure they are properly extinguished. Smoke alarms and fire sprinkler systems play a vital role in providing early warnings and containment during such incidents.
In this particular incident, the quick response from the firefighters and the effectiveness of the safety systems in place prevented further destruction. Their actions should be commended, as they managed to contain the fire and protect both the apartment building and its residents from significant harm.

Cold Case Finally Closed: Arrest Made in 21-Year-Old Attack on Woman
A Harford County resident has been sentenced to life in prison for a 2002 attack on a woman whose body was discovered on the side of the interstate near Port Deposit. Bryant Nakia White, 48, was convicted of attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping, first-degree rape, and first-degree sex offense. The victim, whose name has not been released, survived the ordeal and has shown incredible strength and resilience throughout the investigation and trial.
The attack occurred on April 6, 2002, when the victim, who was searching for her boyfriend, was approached by White. He initially drove away but returned shortly after, claiming to have found her boyfriend. The victim, hoping to be reunited, got into the car, but White locked her in, took her to a different location, and brutally assaulted her before dumping her unconscious body in a ravine.
When the victim regained consciousness, she found herself naked and injured at the bottom of a ditch. Miraculously, she managed to climb out of the ravine, cross a chain-linked fence, and walk along the shoulder of I-95. A truck driver spotted her and offered assistance, ultimately saving her life.
Despite initial investigations, very few leads were generated in the case, and it was suspended for over a decade. However, in March 2020, an investigator from the Maryland State Police reopened the case and requested assistance from the FBI. Through investigative genealogy, they were able to identify White as a person of interest.
After more than two decades of eluding authorities, White was arrested earlier this year and tried for the rape. DNA testing confirmed his involvement, leading to his conviction in October. White has been in custody since his arrest.
The victim's strength and will to survive have been praised by State's Attorney James Dellmyer, who described her as a survivor and a source of inspiration to others. Despite enduring unimaginable horrors, she never gave up hope and continued fighting for justice for over two decades.
