New Report Card Shows Disappointing Performance in Harford County Schools

The Maryland State Department of Education has released data revealing changes in the overall school performance scores for Harford County Public Schools in the 2022-23 academic year.

Out of the 53 schools in Harford, 20 experienced a decrease in their scores, while four schools saw an increase. The scoring, known as the Maryland Report Card, takes various factors into account, such as student achievement and chronic absenteeism.

The average score for Harford dropped from 3.89 to 3.6, still higher than the statewide average of 3.23 in nearby Baltimore County. Superintendent Sean Bulson emphasized that the ratings may not accurately reflect the district's improvements due to changes in how the measurements are conducted.

Terrifying Shooting Incident in Edgewood: Man Guilty of Attempted Murder!

Luke Edward Powell, a 24-year-old man from Edgewood, has been convicted on charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and weapon possession. The conviction comes after a nine-day jury trial in the Circuit Court for Harford County.

The incident dates back to September 5, 2022, when deputies responded to a report of shots fired at the intersection of Hanson Road and Edgewood Road. Powell, riding a red and white dirt bike, allegedly fired multiple shots at a father and his son who were in their vehicle at a red light.

Despite damaging the vehicle, neither victim was seriously injured. Evidence presented at trial, including shell casings and video footage, linked the ammunition used in the shooting to Powell's residence. Powell is set to be sentenced on March 22, 2024.

Baltimore Orioles New Lease Agreement with Camden Yards Expected Soon

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has expressed his belief that a new lease agreement between the Baltimore Orioles and Camden Yards is close to being finalized. Speaking after a meeting of the state's Board of Public Works, Moore stated that negotiations were progressing well and that a deal was imminent.

The board's last scheduled meeting for the year took place, but Moore hinted that another meeting could be called to approve the new lease before the end of the year. Maryland Treasurer Dereck Davis also expressed confidence in reaching an agreement soon. The Orioles' current lease at Camden Yards expires at the end of the year.

A 30-year deal was dramatically announced in September, but concerns were raised over a 99-year development rights agreement linked to it. However, Moore has assured that the deal will be in the best interest of taxpayers and create winners both on and off the field.
