Questions Raised Over Maryland Teachers Union's Spending Habits

An investigation by Project Baltimore has revealed that the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA), the state's largest teachers union, has spent millions of dollars on travel expenses over the past few years.

This raises concerns about the union's financial management, especially considering that the funds often come from taxpayers. While advocating for increased education funding, the MSEA has spent $509,013 on travel expenses in the past year alone. Over the last decade, the union has spent a total of $6,448,327 on travel, averaging $53,736 per month.

At the same time, the union's revenue and assets have reached record highs, with at least 11 employees earning over $200,000 in total compensation last year. This financial imbalance has led critics to question the union's commitment to its tax-exempt mission of improving public education for all students.

Furthermore, with the recent passing of the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, a monumental education spending increase, county leaders are expressing concerns about the financial strain it will place on their budgets. As counties struggle to find funds to implement the plan, the teachers union continues to spend significant amounts on travel while accumulating record-setting assets.

Despite repeated attempts by the group to contact the union for an explanation, they have not responded to the inquiries.
