Maryland Takes Aim at Impaired Driving with Law Enforcement Awards

Law enforcement officers in Harford County, Maryland were celebrated at the annual Impaired Driving Law Enforcement Awards. A total of 76 officers from various agencies were commended for their dedication to enforcing impaired driving laws and their efforts to reduce crashes and fatalities caused by drunk driving. In 2022 alone, these officers made over 14,859 DUI arrests across the state. The event also honored seven officers who made more than 100 DUI arrests each.

The awards ceremony acknowledged the commitment of these officers to removing impaired drivers from Maryland roadways. The event recognized officers trained as Drug Recognition Experts, who are skilled in identifying drivers impaired by substances other than alcohol. Harford County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Christopher Henize was recognized among these specially trained officers for conducting more than 15 Drug Recognition Expert Evaluations.

Over the past five years, Maryland has seen more than 32,250 crashes involving impaired drivers, resulting in 799 deaths and 14,317 injuries. In addition to their enforcement operations, the Motor Vehicle Administration's Highway Safety Office promotes educational campaigns such as "Be the SOBER Driver" and "Be the MAKE A PLAN Driver" to encourage individuals to plan for a sober ride home.

Rutschman and Henderson Shine as Orioles' Key Contributors in Record-Breaking Season

Baltimore Orioles' Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson were both awarded the 2023 American League Silver Slugger honors. Rutschman received the award for the catcher position, while Henderson took home the award for the utility position. Their contributions played a significant role in the Orioles' success, as they finished with the best record in the league and won over 100 games.

Rutschman stood out among the catcher finalists, with the highest batting average and on-base percentage plus slugging percentage (OPS). Although he had fewer home runs compared to his competitors, his batting average of .277 and being part of the league's top team gave him an edge in the voting process. He finished with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs, tying for the highest among AL catchers. Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners and Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals were strong competitors, but Rutschman's overall performance secured his well-deserved win.

Henderson, in the race for the utility award, showcased his versatility by playing multiple positions for the Orioles. He made an impact with 28 home runs and 82 RBIs. The competition was tough, with Issac Paredes from the Tampa Bay Rays as his closest contender. Paredes had 31 home runs and 98 RBIs, contributing significantly to Tampa's success as well. Despite this, Henderson prevailed due to several factors - a slightly higher batting average of .255, more hits, more runs scored, and an impressive nine triples, earning him the runner-up position in the AL for triples.

These awards mark just the beginning of what promises to be a prosperous future for these Orioles stars. Fans have reason to be excited about the young core of talent that will be growing together in the coming seasons.
