Two-Way Immersion Education to Expand in Harford County Public Schools
Harford County Public Schools has received a grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity to expand world language programs in military-connected public schools. The pilot program, called "Two-way Immersion in Elementary Schools" (TIES), will first be implemented at Emmorton Elementary School in Harford County. The primary goal of the program is to improve access to and utilization of world language instruction, ultimately enhancing academic success, achievement, and post-graduation opportunities for students.
TIES is a two-way immersion education program that provides grade-level content and literacy instruction in two languages. Starting in kindergarten or first grade, students will receive instruction in both English and Spanish, promoting bilingualism, bi-literacy, academic achievement, and cross-cultural competence. By offering a comprehensive Spanish language learning experience, TIES aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge for future secondary and post-secondary opportunities.
The five-year grant will support the planning, development, and implementation of the program. The first year will be dedicated to planning, with the kindergarten Spanish immersion classroom set to begin in the 2024-2025 school year. Each subsequent year will see the addition of the next grade level, with the goal of reaching third grade by the 2028-2029 school year.
Harford County Public Schools Superintendent Sean Bulson expressed his enthusiasm for the program, noting that it aligns with the district's commitment to providing a high-quality education for all students. The expansion of world language education in elementary schools, alongside the existing programs in middle schools, demonstrates the district's dedication to preparing students to become global citizens.
Urgent Appeal: Help Solve Edgewood Shooting Mystery and Claim Cash Reward!
A 15-year-old boy was shot in Edgewood, Maryland, on Tuesday night, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrived at the scene on Harford Square Drive at around 8:35 p.m., where they discovered the victim with a gunshot wound to the upper body.
The teenager was quickly airlifted to Shock Trauma and is currently in stable condition. The Harford County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division is now conducting a thorough investigation, and they are urging anyone with information or video footage of the incident to come forward.
Information provided that leads to an arrest and indictment may be eligible for a cash reward up to $2,000 and tips can be submitted online at www.p3tips.com.
Aberdeen Man Pleads Guilty to Rape and Violation of Probation
Tavon Isaiah Harvey plead guilty to first-degree rape and two other charges, including violation of probation. The incident occurred on December 30, 2022, when the victim reported being raped in an abandoned building. Harvey held the victim at knife point and strangled her during the assault, but she managed to escape when someone entered the building.
Harvey was later identified by the victim and DNA evidence confirmed his involvement. The state's attorney expressed hope that the conviction will bring some relief to the victim.
In addition to the rape charge, Harvey also pleaded guilty to another charge for a separate incident that occurred while he was awaiting trial. He sprayed fecal matter over the bars and walls of the day room in the Harford County Detention Center. As a result, deputies and correctional officers had to decontaminate the area.
Harvey is currently held without bond at the detention center and is scheduled to be sentenced on January 25, 2024. If convicted, he could face up to 85 years in prison for the rape case.
