Harford Local Connect - News

Bel Air, Aberdeen, & Havre de Grace recognized as sustainable towns in Harford County!

Bel Air, a town in Maryland, has once again been recognized as a Sustainable Maryland community for its efforts in protecting the environment and supporting the local economy. Notable initiatives include using goats to control non-native plants in Rockfield Park and the success of the Armory Marketplace business incubator, which has seen four tenants transition into opening businesses downtown. The town has held its Sustainable Maryland status since 2014 and currently holds a Silver-level certification.

The recognition was awarded at the Maryland Municipal League's Fall Conference, where Bel Air was among 15 other towns honored for their sustainable practices. The town renews its Sustainable Maryland status every three years, with its latest renewal in 2023. The Sustainable Maryland program, operated by the University of Maryland's Environmental Finance Center, assists Maryland towns in protecting the environment and enhancing their communities. To attain the certification, towns must establish a Green Team consisting of residents, civic leaders, staff, and elected officials who collaborate on sustainability projects.

Bel Air is not the only town in Harford County to receive Sustainable Maryland certifications. Both Aberdeen and Havre de Grace have also been recognized for their sustainable efforts. Havre de Grace maintained its Silver-level certification in 2022, while Aberdeen achieved its first-ever Bronze-level certification in the same year. These towns' commitment to environmental sustainability highlights their dedication to creating a better future for their communities.

Local Businesses Call for Permanent Outdoor Dining Allowance

The Harford County Council recently held a public hearing to discuss a bill that would extend a temporary moratorium allowing for various outdoor dining options in the county. The moratorium, originally introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, would continue through December 2024. Many business owners, like Mark Moody of Double Groove Brewing Company, supported the extension and advocated for a permanent allowance to adapt to the "new normal."

The council also passed the Master Water and Sewer Plan for fall 2023 during their legislative session. This plan is updated semi-annually as per county and state law. In addition, the council approved four appointments to the Office of Mental Health/Core Service Agency of Harford County. This private, nonprofit agency oversees the needs of individuals in the Harford County Public Behavioral Health System and ensures the provision of high-quality services. The agency operates crisis response services, including a 24/7 hotline.

Two resolutions were introduced during the council meeting, which, if approved, would grant real property tax credits for Coppermine Athletic Fields in Edgewood and Perryman Industrial Business Park in Aberdeen.
