Award-Winning Bridge Rehabilitation Project Completed in Harford County
Harford County's Stafford Road Bridge rehabilitation project has been recognized as the medium-sized project of the year by the County Engineers Association of Maryland. The bridge, located over Deer Creek in Susquehanna State Park, was originally built in 1950 and was in need of rehabilitation as it was functionally obsolete and structurally deficient.
Due to its location in a state park, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources limited the bridge closure and detour to a nine-month period between Labor Day 2022 and Memorial Day 2023. This timeframe presented a challenge for the Harford County Department of Public Works, but they were able to successfully work within these constraints.
To address the challenges of the project, the Harford County DPW developed cost-effective and innovative solutions. One such solution was the use of fiber-reinforced polymer wrapping around the concrete piers to protect them from abrasion caused by the constant flow of Deer Creek.
Throughout the construction process, the Harford County DPW kept the community informed by maintaining a project website and providing frequent updates. The website was created using in-house GIS resources, and a county-owned drone was used to capture video footage, demonstrating the progress of the project. Signboards at the site and throughout the park also displayed QR codes, making it easy for citizens to access updates from the website.
County Executive Bob Cassilly expressed his pride in the Harford County Department of Public Works for receiving this honor and commended their creative and efficient approach to the rehabilitation project. The main goal of the project was to improve safety for everyone who uses the bridge.
The project was successfully completed, and the bridge was reopened on May 17, 2023, with a wider deck to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring safer usage alongside motorists.
Want to Foster a Dog? The HCSC Urgently Needs Foster Parents to Free Up Kennel Space
The Humane Society of Harford Country (HCSC) is actively recruiting foster parents in order to address the overcrowding issue at their shelter. The organization aims to free up kennel space and make room for new arrivals.
According to Bob Citrullo, Executive Director of the HCSC, the ideal foster parent would be someone who loves dogs, has basic pet care knowledge, can accommodate medium-to-large dogs, and does not own cats due to uncertainties regarding the dogs' history with cats.
The shelter will provide supplies to foster parents. Those interested can contact the shelter via email, phone, or visit in person. The shelter's opening hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Tragic Murder of Marilyn Scott Remains Unsolved - Authorities Appeal for Information

Bel Air, Maryland resident Marilyn Jaz Scott, a 28-year-old Air National Guard Staff Sergeant, was tragically murdered on February 7, 2017. The pregnant woman was shot three times in the head as she sat in her car outside her home on Clarks Ridge Court.
The police believe this was a targeted attack with the sole intention of taking Marilyn's life, as there were no signs of robbery or theft. Detective David Skica stated, "They wanted her dead."
Despite ongoing investigations, no suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Marilyn Scott and her unborn child. If you have any information, please contact the Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7-LOCKUP.

Baltimore Ravens Dominate Detroit Lions in Lopsided Victory

The Baltimore Ravens delivered an impressive performance against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, securing a resounding 38-6 victory. Led by star quarterback Lamar Jackson and new offensive coordinator Todd Monken, the Ravens reached the end zone four times before the Lions even managed to secure a first down. Jackson had a near-perfect passer rating of 155.8, throwing for 357 yards and three touchdowns while also running for one.
The Ravens' offense showcased its potential under Monken's guidance, with Jackson finding open receivers downfield and utilizing his scrambling abilities when necessary. Tight end Mark Andrews, who caught two touchdown passes, praised Jackson and Monken, describing their performance as "elite." Baltimore's strong offensive display was the most complete of the season, demonstrating their potential as they faced off against a resilient Detroit team.
Throughout the game, Jackson executed deep passes with precision, often finding open receivers who had plenty of room to gain yards after the catch. The Ravens' offensive line protected him well, and when under pressure, Jackson's scrambling abilities kept plays alive. His performance included a 7-yard bootleg touchdown run on fourth-and-1, a 12-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor, and an 8-yard scoring toss to Andrews.
Defensively, the Ravens stymied the Lions, allowing only one touchdown and five sacks. This impressive defensive display brought Baltimore's total touchdowns allowed this season to seven, the lowest in the league. Despite facing some shaky quarterbacks in previous games, the Ravens made a statement against a Detroit team that previously had a four-game winning streak.
Injuries were a concern for both teams during the game. Detroit's Mohamed Ibrahim suffered a hip injury and had to be carted off the field, while Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell sustained a hamstring injury. Despite these setbacks, the Ravens remain a formidable force in the AFC North under the leadership of Coach John Harbaugh.
