Retired Programmer Strikes it Rich with Maryland Lottery Win

Animation Money GIF

A 65-year-old retired computer programmer from Harford County is celebrating this week after winning a seven-figure prize on a "Multi-Match" ticket he purchased over the summer. The lucky winner, who had previously won $10,000 on his favorite game, bought the winning ticket at his regular Wawa store on East Churchville Road in Fountain Green back in June.

For the drawing, the Bel Air man decided to choose his own numbers for one line and left the other two lines to be quick-picks. To his delight, one of the computer-generated picks turned out to be the winning combination, earning him the $1.1 Million jackpot.

Initially in disbelief, the winner checked his ticket and received a "See Lottery" message. He then confirmed with the store manager that a jackpot-winning ticket had indeed been sold at that Wawa. The store manager instantly recognized him as the winner when he silently nodded in agreement.

With his newfound fortune, the lucky retiree plans to use the money to pay off some debts and take a well-deserved vacation in Las Vegas.

Public Hearing Scheduled for Important Harford County Bills

The Harford County Council has announced that they will be holding a public hearing on Monday to discuss three significant pieces of legislation. The bills address the issues of warehousing, apartments, and the term limits of county council members. These bills were originally introduced during the council meeting on September 5th.

The public hearing is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., and the council chambers will open at 5 p.m. It is anticipated that there will be a high number of speakers, so the council is encouraging members of the public to preregister if they wish to testify in support or opposition of any of the bills. It is important to note that each bill has its own separate hearing, so individuals must register for each bill they wish to speak on if they would like to testify on multiple bills.

Those interested in preregistering can do so by emailing [email protected] or by calling 410-638-3343. Preregistration must be completed by 3 p.m. on Monday.

Bel Air is calling for volunteers to help with its upcoming 150th anniversary celebration, known as Then and Now. The event will take place on April 27, 2024, at the Armory from noon to 4 p.m.

Individuals interested in hosting a booth at the event must submit an application by November 1. The celebration also welcomes individuals who want to organize their own events related to the anniversary.

A new website has been launched, featuring the event's logo designed by Nate Dorrell, a recent graduate of The John Carroll School. The website also showcases historical photos of Bel Air and encourages residents to share their own photos and stories of the town's history.

FBI Arrests Maryland Resident for Assault and Sexual Abuse on Carnival Cruise Ship

A federal grand jury has charged Jalen Thomas Kelley, a 21-year-old resident of Abingdon, Maryland, with aggravated sexual abuse, sexual abuse, and assault within the territorial jurisdiction. Kelley was apprehended by the FBI Charlotte Field Office in Wingate, North Carolina, on September 20, 2023.

The indictment was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Erek L. Barron, and Special Agent in Charge Thomas J. Sobocinski of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office.

According to the indictment, which covers the period between January 1, 2023, and January 2, 2023, the defendant forced a sexual act and assaulted Victim 1 without consent aboard the Carnival Legend cruise vessel, which had its departure and arrival in Baltimore, Maryland.

If convicted, Kelley could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. However, it is important to note that actual sentences for federal crimes tend to be less severe than the maximum penalties. The final sentence, if applicable, will be determined by a federal district court judge who will consider various factors, including the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

It is vital to understand that an indictment does not equate to a finding of guilt. An individual charged through an indictment is presumed innocent until proven otherwise in subsequent criminal proceedings.

The investigation into the matter is still ongoing, and anyone with information related to this case is urged to reach out to the FBI Baltimore at 410-265-8080.

United States Attorney Erek L. Barron commended the FBI for their diligent work in the investigation and expressed gratitude towards Wingate University Campus Safety and Wingate Police Department for their valuable assistance. Mr. Barron also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Katelyn Semales and Sean Delaney, who are responsible for prosecuting the federal case.

Breaking: Baltimore Orioles Secure Future with Massive 30-Year Lease!

Good news for Orioles fans! The Baltimore Orioles have secured a new 30-year lease to keep their home at Camden Yards. The announcement was made during Thursday night's game against the Boston Red Sox. The new lease agreement includes two five-year options that extend into the 2060s, ensuring that the Orioles will remain in Baltimore for generations to come.

The agreement was reached between the Orioles, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, the State of Maryland, and the Maryland Stadium Authority. It comes as a relief to fans who were worried about rumors of a potential move to Nashville. Orioles CEO John Angelos had previously stated that the team would have "30 more years in Baltimore," indicating his commitment to the city.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott expressed his excitement about the deal, emphasizing the Orioles' importance as an institution in the city. He thanked John Angelos and the entire Orioles organization for their dedication to Baltimore. He also extended his gratitude to Governor Moore, Maryland Stadium Authority Chair Craig Thompson, and the state team for their efforts in securing the team's future.

Last year, the state approved $1.2 billion for improvements to Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium. However, earlier this year, Angelos was seeking additional funds for a ballpark village, which was deemed unrealistic due to the lack of available land around the stadium.

Orioles Park at Camden Yards is an iconic venue that revolutionized baseball when it opened in 1992. It brought back the retro-style ballpark and put an end to the cookie-cutter era. The Orioles are currently leading the AL East and are on the verge of clinching the division title..
